SAMUEL
LERCHER
Biography
Samuel Lercher is a French pianist and composer living in Portugal who, from an early age, demonstrated a keen interest in both classical repertoire and jazz improvisation and composition. Over the years, his affinity for both classical and jazz music has evolved into an original hallmark in Samuel Lercher's composition and performance.
He began his musical studies in Paris at Université Paris VIII and École Normale de Musique de Paris. Continuing in Lisbon at Universidade Nova and Escola Superior de Música, he graduated in Musicology, Pedagogy, and Piano.
In 2014, he founded the Samuel Lercher Trio with the musicians André Rosinha and Marcelo Araújo, recording the original album Épilogue (Sintoma, 2015). The album received acclaim from critics, highlighted on Antena 1, Antena 2, RTP2, TSF, Jornal Público, and Jazz.pt.
In 2015, he launched a new original project, the Fauksa Quartet, bringing together French and Portuguese musicians (Hamza Touré, Freddy Blondeau, and Rui Pereira). The quartet recorded the album Or in 2022, released in Paris at the Festivitry festival.
In 2020, Samuel Lercher was invited to participate as a pianist and co-musical director in the project "Salvador Sobral canta Brel," presented in a series of sold-out concerts: Grande Auditório at CCB, Sala Suggia at Casa da Música, Teatro Aveirense, Teatro Maria Matos, Festa da Francofonia, Convento de São Francisco, and Théatre de Montbéliard in France.
He released his second trio album, "Ballade," in April 2022 at Hot Clube de Portugal, featuring the renowned musicians André Rosinha and Bruno Pedroso. The album received a four-star review from Jazz.pt.
In May 2024, the third album from Samuel Lercher Trio, Fractal, was released by Sintoma Records, with the support of Antena 2 and the Cultural Fund of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores. Maintaining the excellence profile in the rhythm section with André Rosinha on bass and Bruno Pedroso on drums, this autobiographical album portrays significant elements of Samuel Lercher's life, conveying his essence as both a man and a musician.
With this release, the trio aims to maintain a regular schedule of concerts that celebrate cultural exchange, emphasizing that culture knows no boundaries. The tour includes major jazz venues in Portugal and Spain, such as Angrajazz Festival (Azores), Guarda in Jazz, Ciclo de Jazz do Fundão, Jazz na Praça da Erva (Viana do Castelo), Jazz na Vila (Azeitão), Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisbon), Ciclo de Jazz na Ordem (Porto), Clarence Jazz Club (Málaga) and Espacio Turina (Sevilha).
